Care cannot shorten the time of growth.
She enters rice taller than a person, yet must still wait for a small seedling to grow. Water, wind and fallen stalks give care its weight. A companion offers a hand, a wooden support holds a stem, and empty pegs mark what the harvest cannot fill. In the morning, she sits beside a seedling again.
I enlarge the rice until the weight of ripeness becomes a space one can enter. She looks up toward the panicles and bends beneath fallen stalks. Scale changes her posture without removing the work. Hands must still steady a tray, carry bamboo and share the grain that remains.
The book moves from cracked soil through cold rain to morning beside a white wall. A few rice bundles share a frame with a long row of empty pegs, leaving room for both gain and absence. The final seedling does not suddenly grow. Care means returning to it, and allowing the wait to continue.
