A Story of Learning to Reply

On a desk at noon, a band of sunlight is missing a piece, and nothing seems to be blocking it. A cold light lives only in fog and steam. It cannot see faces or read words; it reads only how long light is blocked, and how many times. She first tries to understand it with grids and notes. Only later does she set her familiar methods aside and answer with her own shadow.

Understanding another often begins by setting aside the way we are used to speaking. In this book her shadow is not a shape but a span of time: one long, one short, a pause. The final answer is small. It lands on a kitchen table, inside the shadow of her hand, and the conversation goes on.

The signals in this story borrow from the ways nature speaks in light: fireflies recognise one another by the length and spacing of their flashes, and cephalopods pass messages through moving patterns of light and dark on their skin. On a mountain with the sun behind you, your shadow can fall into the fog below. The light tide and its grammar are invented for this book.
