Read the statement in English

Yesterday’s paths leave room for today’s directions.

When the queen pauses, the city returns its older footsteps to her. Worn traces emerge in mother-of-pearl: directions once taken by bare feet, shoes and wheels become visible again. Along the way she encounters baskets, tables and columns, and the people who still use this city. Memory preserves a path; life can pass beside it. Two times share the same ground in this book: old traces within the shell and dust carried by today’s footsteps.

An old route reaches the foot of a column. Another once turned back; someone paused along it. The queen can recall these directions, but she does not choose how residents must walk today. Fresh powder loosens and fades. Some footsteps belong only to the moment in which they are taken. She sets her jacket down, takes the pin from her hair, lets someone in the city retie her braid, and leaves the pin in a fruit basket. In the end she sits at a quiet corner of the trading square, the jacket beside her, her hands open; the fresh powder prints on the ground all lead away from her. The city remembers her, and continues to make room for the present.

The work begins with Meenakshi’s image as queen and the urban narratives of Madurai. In Paranjothi’s Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam, learning, martial skill, coronation and rule form a sequence; the city and divine presence shape one another. Here that agency becomes a way of seeing time, while streets and residents retain directions of their own.
