Read the statement in English

Weaving unseen lives into a place where they can be seen.

The scales determine the weight of wool; the temple determines the stories on the cloth. Walking between the dye house, the spinning gallery and the hillside, a weaver notices that the people who make the cloth are absent from its images. She begins to weave differently.

When the cloth is torn, she does not hide it. She hangs its wounds and its working lives in the market, where every pair of eyes can read it anew. The red thread she leaves is slender: just enough to mark that the next cloth will begin where she chooses.

This book draws on the story of Arachne in Book VI of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The goddess is called Pallas, or Athena. Where the original cloth exposes divine deception, this retelling places landscapes and working people at its centre. The temple commission, the town and the ending in the market are original inventions. Arachne does not become a spider; she begins another work in flax. This ending also responds to the ancient tradition in Pliny’s Natural History 7.196 that credits Arachne with the invention of flax-working and nets. Clothing, spaces and scenes of craft are creative composites.
