What can we offer someone who does not want to come out?
The old chronicles tell how Amaterasu hid in the rock cave and the world went dark; the gods danced and laughed outside, then led her out and sealed the cave behind her.
Here the weight shifts to the people outside, who are not very good at performing: their beat on a wooden crate goes wrong, and the branches they raise are thrown by firelight into the shadow of an enormous bird. Their laughter reaches the rock wall but does not decide her next step. Slowly they learn to lower their voices and make room.
The mirror is not a command, only a mirror on a stand, carried out into a clearing. She reaches out and changes its angle; the decision is hers.
From the cold of the cave to the firelight at its mouth, the daylight on the grassy slope and, at last, a rest by the stream: walking toward the light does not oblige her to be happy.
The cave stays open. She still chooses to catch up with her companions; only because she can go back is walking out a choice.
